This video tutorial was challenging, but I am very happy with the results! We are having an excellent giveaway too! Two quarts of CeCe Caldwell paint (your choice) one container of Satin Finish and one container of Divinity Crackle! See details on how to enter at the end of this post.
I used five products for this tutorial, a quart of CeCe Caldwell’s Vermont Slate, approximately 3/4 quart of Traverse City Cherry, and 1/4 quart of a quart of Vintage White. I also used some Divinty Crackle and CeCe’s new Satin Finish!
I used the word approximate because I didn’t measure exactly…
I started with the Red and just kept adding the white until it was the color I wanted.
Here are some answers to the questions I have been getting about this project,
Does the fabric feel hard or scratchy?
No, It feels like aged and cracked leather, like an old Bomber jacket and it gives when you sit on it because this paint is chalky and soft, there is no latex in it so it does not have a hard quality to it.
Does the fabric crack or rip?
Well I took this sofa to my house for a test drive and all seems to be well, I used the crackle on this because I wanted that effect, I would think that if you do get any cracks where you don’t want them, you could easily add a bit more paint in that spot.
Does the color come off on your clothes?
No, the Satin finish works as a sealer.
I wouldn’t recommend waxing fabric, but I did wax the frame and loved the results!
Can you paint on leather or velvet?
I don’t know… the fabric on this sofa was a heavy cotton/rayon blend.
If anyone has tried other types of fabric please let me know!
Here are some tips that I didn’t include in the video,
Use a darker color for your first coat if you are going to crackle.
I don’t like to use painters tape, instead I used a tiny paint brush to get the areas close to the frame and to get into the pin tucked areas of the sofa. I’m sure painters tape works, it just makes me crazy!
The satin finish really brought this to life, and gave this the leather effect that I was going for, without it the fabric had a really flat look.
The trickiest part of this job was getting enough of the pink paint on without messing up the crackle,
it’s important to wait for the crackle to dry completely and then put a heavy coat of your second color on. If you go back over where you have already painted it will mess up the crackle effect. If you want to add more paint in areas where there wasn’t enough coverage, do it after the paint has dried.

I just stumbled across your blog when I was looking for paint. I came across your painted sofa and had a few questions.
I have a darkish flower printed sofa that I want to cover up. Would you recommend using CeCe paint in a white or gray as a base coat before painting the sofa in the desired color?
Is it necessary to use crackle?
Would you suggest two coats of the satin finish just to make sure the couch doesn’t bleed on clothing?
Thanks for your help!
(Sorry for posting such a long post here. Tried to use your contact form but rec’d an error message.)
hi Monique,
I don’t think you would need to prime, CeCe paint offers really good coverage at the most you may need to apply two coats.
The crackle was something I used for fun to add another texture but it is not necessary to use at all.I only applied one coat of satin finish and didn’t have any issues with paint coming off , however i’m single no kids pets or hubby, if you think there will be some wear and tear, this would probably be a great idea. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks so much for your comments! Debi 🙂
I also have a question: I have a white leather couch, which is very-very comfortable but it looks really ugly (a hubby with every day jeansrivets and a little daughter which thinks the sofa is a trampoline).
What do you mean? Will it work?
Hi Yvonne,
i have never painted on leather, it seems like it might work? I would seal it really well though. Good luck let me know how it works out!

I painted a screen door with destin green then dark age wax. After I applied the wax I noticed spots I want to cover better with paint. Can I just paint over the wax?
hi Brandi,
yes there have been many times that I painted something and wanted to change it after waxing, I just painted over, trial and error is sometimes the best way to learn lol!

This is such a great blog post! Appreciating the hard work you put into your site. It’s awesome blog.
I was so stoked that you posted a video! I’m taking a deep breath and pulling my moms wing chair (upholstered in a rose pink damask) out of storage and taping off the legs to paint the fabric with cece’s chalk paint. If it turns out anywhere near as nice as your couch, then I’m moving on to my favorite swivel chair…Wish me well.
good luck Jen!
hi i also have a wingback chair thats a light linen color looks dingy so im debating on doing this with my annie sloan chalk paint! have you done yours yet?
How much paint did you use on the sofa you did? I am considering painting a full size sofa and trying to estimate quantity of paint needed.
Hi Lynn,
I used about a half a quart of paint for each layer ( I did two layers) hope this helps you out 🙂

Hi Debi, love browsing your site and all the interesting info. Your store front is so awesome with all the color going on! question: How hard to the touch is the fabric you painted when it dries? Is this something that will crack when you sit on it if the material is flexible like in a regular couch? Thanks so much!
Love this trying this paint soon
I’ve been painting a little bedside table and aging it today using a very light lavender of Cece’s paint. It’s the first time I’ve used it and it’s AWESOME! SO, I was looking on pinterest for aging techniques for the chalk paint which I found but I stumbled onto your video! AND>>>> I’ve been looking everywhere for textile medium to add to latex paint and it comes in really small bottles and is really expensive- was just at two stores last night and looking on line because I have this sweet chaise that my mom gave me but the fabric is spotted from age. SO this is an AWESOME post because I have both the paint and the satin and I”m going upstairs to try it right now!! Thank you so much!
Hi,
Just stumbled across your website and I wondered if you could tell me what paint (if any) is suitable for painting a leather effect bed frame that’s chocolate colour and I want to paint it white.
Many thanks
